Weight savings plus power, power, power: the 2018 911 GT2 RS is officially here, just unveiled at the UK’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
A standard magnesium roof and forged magnesium wheels (part of a set of optional features in the "Weissach package") help the new GT2 stay lean and mean at 3241 pounds with a full tank of fuel (the power-to-weight ratio is 4.63 pounds per horsepower). Those Weissach package options, priced at $31,000, take some 60 pounds off the vehicle weight, thanks to the mag wheels and lots of carbon fiber elements. The titanium exhaust system saves another 15 pounds.
The rear-wheel drive coupe roars out with a turbocharged 700-horsepower 3.8-liter six-cylinder engine, seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds.
Traction and stability come from a racing chassis with rear-axle steering and a modified stability control system.
A red Alcantara suede interior with black leather and carbon fiber trim sets off the ruggedly elegant overall design.
Look for the GT2 RS in dealer showrooms in early 2018, at a base price around $293,000.
