FORECAST OF MAGNESIUM PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION IN RUSSIA, TO 2020
The majority of magnesium consumption in Russia is earmarked for titanium production, with more than 80% of the output being used in the engine manufacturing, aerospace and shipbuilding industries.
The plan for the period to 2020 envisages accelerated, innovated development of the high technology sectors of the economy (including aerospace and shipbuilding), and the weapons and military equipment industries, along with increasing the volume of titanium products delivered to the domestic market and expanding existing market segments in the world trade.
Projections according to the innovated development scenario see the Russian market demand for high technology rolled products increasing to 20,000 tons in 2020, and to 27,000 tons in 2025.

To meet market demand for titanium products, JSC “VSMPO-Avisma Corporation” plans to construct new titanium production facilities at “Avisma.” Estimates project an increase of total titanium output to 44,000 tons per annum upon the project’s implementation. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2016, with investments in the project amounting to 7.8 billion roubles.

Titanium production development will give rise to expanded magnesium consumption. Development of the economy’s high technology sectors (aerospace engineering, shipbuilding, automotive industry, oil-and-gas industry), where magnesium is used as aluminum alloy component and in the form of magnesium alloys, will also promote an increase in magnesium demand. Regarding major aircraft engineering programs, of particular note is production of the SuperJet SSJ-100 and An-148 airplanes. Major programs in military aircraft engineering provide for development and production of Yak transport aircraft, MiG fighters and the T-50 new generation fighter.

Also worth noting is the increasing use of magnesium in zirconium production. The production modernization plan of JSC “ChMZ” specifies mastering the novel approach to manufacturing zirconium, utilizing chlorine technology as an alternative to the electrolytic process.

An increasing consumption of magnesium alloys in the production of wheels and other forged and extruded products and similar parts (e.g.,aerospace components) is also worth mentioning. The growth potential is significant, with the annual production of an additional 35,000 wheels requiring the use of approximately 1,000 tons of magnesium.

Three possible scenarios for the development of the magnesium market exist: positive, baseline and negative. Positive and baseline forecasts are related to economic upturn, both worldwide and in Russia, to on-going implementation of the programs of development of Russia’s titanium industry, and to growth in demand for magnesium products. According to a positive outlook, the volume of magnesium consumption may achieve the level of 90,000 tons in 2020 and 100,000 tons in 2025.

A possible negative development scenario is characterized by a refusal to implement new long-term large-scale projects and programs with state participation, and a stagnation in development of the of fuel and energy sector. According to such an outlook, magnesium consumption volume in 2014-2020 will remain at the level of 66,000-70,000 tons, rising to 72,000 tons in 2025.
